The Federal Republic of Germany is made up of 16 states with
Berlin as the capital. Its size is slightly smaller than Montana. Its
population is about 83 million. It is Europe’s largest economy and
most populous nation. Involved in two world wars in the first half of
the 20th century left the country occupied by Allied powers of the US,
UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. In 1949, there were two German
states, East and West Germany, as they were commonly known. Unification came
in 1990. Government is Basic law adopted on May 8, 1949. It is a democratic system
which expresses the general principle that all people are equal before the law.

Germany’s flag has three bands of black, red & gold.

Its natural resources consist of iron ore, coal, potash, timber, lignite (a source of energy), uranium, copper, natural gas, salt, nickel and arable land. Germany is among the world’s largest and most technologically advanced producers of iron, steel, coal, cement, chemicals, machinery, vehicles, machine tools, electronics, food and beverages, shipbuilding, textiles.  In January 2002, Germany and 11 other EU countries introduced a common European currency, the euro.

Its climate is temperate, cool, cloudy, wet winters to moderate heat in summer.

Germany is known for its good wine and beers. In 1526, the duchy of Bavaria passed a law stating that beer can only contain barley, hops, and water.

Germany has a lot to offer its people as well as visitors. From its lowlands in the north, uplands in the center, and Bavarian Alps in the south, it has delightful countrysides, exciting cities and picturesque mountains. There are historic old buildings, many beautiful castles and churches, ancient walled towns with gates and towers, some carrying on old traditions. Major cities offer culture with opera, concerts and museums with beautiful works of art.

Their national holiday is Unity Day, October 3, (1990), when East and West Germany were united since being separated in 1945 following WWII. Other holidays are celebrated with much emphasis on tradition and culture.   Christmas   is a special time to be in Germany.  Some of the others celebrated are Fasching or Karneval, Easter, May Day and Oktoberfest to name a few.  Many towns and villages have their own special holidays.
